    I believe the high cost is because of the high amount of silver that is in them. I know that is what there is such high security at the plant here in Alabama that makes them.

    The special sauce in a Catalytic Converter is Rhodium (Rh) alloyed with platinum or palladium. (Pt and Pd)

    Rhodium runs about USD $17,000 per ounce! Told there is between a half-gram to gram of Rh in a cat ($270 to $540 plus the value of the alloying Rt & Pd)

    Stuff mostly comes from South Africa with the next producer being Russia.
