Sounds like a good idea to me. I was always a fan of the old less areas net.
I agree going back to 1 echo isn't right either. ;)

I'm just a user now so I don't have access to the admin areas, but I wanted
to weigh in on this area as I used to be quite active in it.

You should have access to this one, it's open to everyone and not just sysops. It's a bit of a concern if I'm posting admin/announcements and not everyone is seeing them :(
