It seems that they have some Y2K bug and they wont start and i cant think o way to get either of them working except to put something in the batch file that sets the date to prior to 1999-12-31.
SRE needs installed with a date before 2000, then it will run maintenance on his first run for how many days since whatever date you installed it on. Sometimes taking hours to run without it looking like it was doing anything. After that inital maint, the game runs fine.

I have no issues for BRE as long as you are using the latest build, it should be Y2K ready. I have 5 different copies of that game running here. On windows mind you, not Linux.
