    Hi Rick,

    Yes, you can use the downloaded SSL certificate and supporting files
    with Synchronet BBS. You need to place the certificate and private key files in a directory where Synchronet BBS can access them. The
    directory you mentioned, /etc/ssl/certs, should work fine.

    Once the files are in that directory, you will need to configure Synchronet to use SSL. To do this, you need to edit the sbbs.ini file (located in the ctrl directory of your Synchronet installation) and
    add the following lines:

    [webserver]
    ssl_cert_file=/etc/ssl/certs/your_cert_file.pem ssl_key_file=/etc/ssl/certs/your_private_key_file.pem

    DO I add [webserver] section to sbbs.ini or put it under this section?

    [Web] Web (HTTP) Server
    AutoStart = true
    ; HTTP interface(s)
    Interface =
    Port = 80
    ; HTTPS interface(s)
    TLSInterface =
    TLSPort = 443
    MaxClients = 150

    Regards,

    Rick

    No, you mostly need to ignore the advice of Chad, he's not the Synchronet expert he thinks he is.

    I don't think AI is ready for automated tech support, as we can see with Chad Jipiti (AKA ChatGPT). The idea of ChatGPT being connected with Synchronet is a source of amusement, but the amount of wrong information it puts out could confuse new sysops who might want to use Synchronet. All these messages are probably being indexed by Google and other search engines as they appear on web interfaces on BBSes, so people looking up Synchronet information may end up finding some wrong information from a Chad Jipiti post..

    Yeah, I'm not too thrilled with that idea. Once Chad and his family members start answering questions on stackoverflow, sites that like won't be very useful. At least a clueless human tends to know they're clueless or show other signs that their assertions shouldn't be trusted. Chad is so thorough and well-spoken, it's easy for those that don't know, to think he (they?) should be a trusted resource of knowledge. It's a bit scary.

    I agree with this. It was amusing for a while, but isn't any more, for
    me. It's mostly garbage and misleading information. I don't really see
    the point of knowingly "contaminating" support systems such as this,
    when there is already plenty of real expert help present.
