Ive been following your conversations, guys, and Im
convinced about two things:
There are too much "dead" echos... it would be cool to
merge some.
Thanks for your comment! And welcome.
I fear that most operators of the boards today are more
absorbed by the technical aspects of getting their boards
operational and making sure echomail flows. Most sysops do not
really seem to be communicators/writers.
Perhaps "in the beginning" echomail content was generously
provided by users and visitors to the boards. At some point,
the concept of a moderator was deemed necessary to step in and
wrangle people onto better behaviour or have them delt with -
something a sysop was probably more than happy to delegate to
someone else. Sysops could just sit aside. Meanwhile the
consumer left the village to go elswhere. Now, the village is a
ghost town of empty buildings and empty rooms. There is nothing
to moderate, literally.
Moderators nowadays need to do some kind of job promoting
topics, posting interesting and related stuff, and not
only those old lists of boring rules...
The moderator term does not exude editor/writer. :(
c mon, nobody cares! A lot of echoes are zombie-like... it
would be cool if every moderator could post something
useful and enhance the debate... Dont know, but maybe some
interesting article (not only "a link"... but thats better
than nothing at all) twice or thrice a week.
I concur. As moderator of this echo, that is precisely the way
I look at it. Check out my earlier posts if you can. I don't
have the responsibilty of maintaining a bbs system, so I can
make time to try and contribute to a topic.
This is, of course, a change in perspective and a
traditions change too... but I think its worth. Happy new
year!!!
Once again.. I appreciate your speaking up. Perhaps lay out a
plan - which echos ought to be merged, and why. Or.. as Mark
has mentioned.. generate some content to wake up the dead.
Maybe try to introduce other people you may know to the
fidostyle of messaging.
